The next time you have a chance to pig out at Slow’s Barbecue in Detroit, consider a new addition to the menu at the famous barbecue.
It has a close connection to our hearts at WJR.
Last July, the son of our newscaster and reporter Marie Osborne died suddenly of an undetected heart condition. John Osborne was 28.
You may not have known John, but if you went to Slow’s, you knew his work.
John was the lead pit-master at Slow’s, smoking the meat that so many people love.
In memory of John, the Osborne family established a scholarship endowment at Schoolcraft College in Livonia to help culinary students. Besides his love of cooking and barbecue, John Osborne was known for something else.
He came to work everyday wearing one of his many plaid shirts. He loved plaid.
So to help grow the endowment, Slow’s has created the Plaid Pig sandwich.
Slow’s will donate one dollar from each Plaid Pig sandwich to the scholarship fund.
Marie is off work today at WJR and she’s doing a few appearances to help publicize the fund.
Twice a year, scholarship money will be awarded to deserving students who want to further their education in the food industry. You’ll find the Plaid Pig among the many BBQ items at Slow’s. And we hope you’ll get as much pleasure from it as we know John Osborne would want you to have.
