(March 19) - WJR’s Ann Thomas talks with Holocaust Survivor Ela Stein Weissberger. Ela is in Detroit this week to be a part of the Michigan Opera Theatre’s Children’s Chorus’ production of Brundibar. Mrs. Weissberger played the “Cat” in the original production of Brundibar in 1942 in Terezin, a transition concentration camp near Prague. Most of the children housed at that facility eventually died in Nazi death camps. Mrs. Weissberger was one of the survivors and she tells Ann Thomas she travels around the country being a part of Brundibar so people will never forget the children who died at the hands of the Nazis.

Brundibar is a folk tale that tells the story of two children who are sent to look for milk for their ailing mother. An Evil organ grinder named Brundibar (Hitler) tries to keep them from getting the milk. A Sparrow, Cat (Mrs. Weissberger), a dog and a chorus of children come to their aid and they are victorious.
