Specials at 7 – Shriners of Michigan Airs 3rd Wednesday of Each Month 7 p.m. Shriners International is an organization that provides men with camaraderie and an opportunity to improve their own community. Former and present day members you may be familiar with include names, such as Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, former President and Michigan native, Gerald Ford, J Edgar Hoover, Harry Truman, Ty Cobb, Arnold Palmer, and more. Shriners are widely known for their presence in circuses and family-oriented events, however their main goal is to help children with various illnesses. Through funds raised, Shriners are able to provide access to healthcare for numerous children across the world, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. The Shrine Circus, founded in 1906 for fun and entertainment, began to play a role as a significant fundraiser for the Shriner Hospitals as well as the local lodges. There are over one quarter million Shriners, easily identified by their red hats called Fezzes – all working to support the cause. Currently, Shriner Hospitals operate 22 health facilities across North America. Nick Singelis, a member of the Shriners has joined forces with News/Talk 760 WJR to give you an inside look at the world of Shriners, as he tells us a bit about the unique history and culture of these modern-day men, often identified by their hats.
