Today is the last day to register to vote for May 5 election

LANSING, MI — Today is the last day to register to vote for the May 5 election, where Michigan voters will be asked to decide whether to approve a road proposal. Proposal 1 would raise the sales tax from 6 to 7 percent, change how gas is taxed and gives $1.25 billion more funding for roads, among other changes. Michigan residents may register by mail or in person at their county, city or township clerk’s office, or by visiting any Secretary of State office.

To check if and where you are registered, go to www.michigan.gov/vote. To register, a person must be 18 or older, be a US citizen and live in a Michigan municipality. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

To vote absentee, you need to meet certain criteria.

  • 60 years or older
  • Physically unable to attend the polls
  • Expecting to be absent from where you vote while polls are open.
  • Unable to go to the polls due to a religious reason
  • In jail awaiting arraignment or trial
  • Working as an election inspector in a precinct outside your precinct of residence.

To get an absentee ballot, applications must be submitted by 2 p.m. May 2. You can pick up an absentee ballot in person from you local clerk by 4 p.m. May 4.
