DETROIT, MI — Detroit police for nearly a month have been looking for a suspected serial rapist.
A 21-year-old man believed to be responsible for at least some of those attacks was arrested by Detroit police Friday.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Tuesday charged 21-year-old Michael Sykes of Detroit with 30 felonies related to two cases involving five women.
The first case dates back to March 24, 2008, when Sykes would have been 14 years old.
Prosecutors believe Sykes kidnapped,sexually assaulted and robbed two women, 25 and 26, for which he’s charged with two counts of kidnapping, six counts of criminal sexual conduct and two counts of unarmed robbery.
The second case stems from an incident on March 29, when investigators say Sykes kidnapped, sexually and physically assaulted and robbed three women, 19, 20 and 21 respectively. He’s charged with three counts of kidnapping, none counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of armed robbery, three counts of felonious assault and a felony firearms charge.
“I would like to commend the work of the Detroit Police Department, but our work is not done,” Worthy said in a prepared statement Tuesday. “We will continue to investigate any other cases related to this suspect.”
