Redford newborn who died after being found in mother’s desk at work suffocated, coroner says

REDFORD, MI — Police say a baby boy died shortly after his mother gave birth in her employer’s bathroom stall in Redford and then put the newborn in a desk drawer.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be homicide by asphyxiation on Thursday, but the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office hadn’t issued any criminal charges as of Friday morning, Redford Police Lt. David Holt said.

“We expect that to happen some time this morning,” he said Friday.

The mother, 25, is a temporary worker from Wyandotte, the Detroit Free Press reported.

On March 31, after giving birth at Ceva Logisitics, where she was assigned for work, the mother returned to her desk and made an emergency call requesting medical assistance, Holt said.

Police arrived and found the mother, as well as her newborn boy in a nearby drawer.

The mother was hospitalized and released but hasn’t been arrested in connection with the death.

“The issue in question was the cause of death,” Holt said. “If the medical examiner would have come back with a different cause of death, we wouldn’t have a crime.”
