Eastern Market set to open Shed 5 after three-year, $8.5M renovation

DETROIT, MI – Vendors at the end of Eastern Market will continue selling their tried and true produce and flowers, but the open air market’s Shed 5 now offers a newly-renovated space from which to do so.

After three years of work, and $8.5 million, Shed 5 will officially open Saturday morning.

The project was the largest restoration and expansion at Eastern Market since Eastern Market Corporation began working on the 165,000-square-foot market in 2006.

According to Dan Carmody, president of Eastern Market Corporation, the Shed 5 renovation bolsters the market’s mission.

“This allows Eastern Market to do a better job of our mission…which is to nourish Detroit,” he said.

The restored shed will replicate Shed 3, which has for some time been the most desirable shed for vendors and shoppers alike for some time.

Shed 5 has heated concrete floors, Carmody said, which will keep it functioning all year round. New doors and windows will more effectively insulate the all-seasons shed.

As the shed will host a big portion of flowers and plants sold at the market, there is now better drainage on the floors, too.

Carmody said everything but the basic skeleton of the shed is new — but even that’s been reinforced with a steel frame on the west side of the building. MORE
