GM making $5.4 billion investment in U.S. plants

DETROIT, MI – General Motors said Thursday it is investing $5.4 billion in its U.S. plants over the next three years, including $783.5 million at three facilities in Michigan.

The Michigan investment includes $124 million at the Pontiac Metal Center, $520 million for tooling and equipment at the Lansing Delta Township plant, where it is preparing for new product and retaining 1,900 jobs; and $139.5 million for a new body shop and stamping facility upgrades at Pre-Production Operations in Warren.

Details of the remaining $4.6 billion in U.S. investments will be released in coming months, the Detroit automaker said.

“These investments are evidence of a company on the move, strategically investing in the people, tools and equipment to produce cars, trucks and crossovers that are built to win in the marketplace, with stunning design, quality and breakthrough technologies,” GM North America President Alan Batey said in a statement.

All three Michigan investments are being touted as GM’s commitment to making quality products.

“The common thread among our investments is the focus on product improvements that benefit customers,” Cathy Clegg, vice president of GM North America Manufacturing, said in a statement. “Together with our UAW partners, we’re working hard to exceed consumers’ ever-increasing quality expectations.”

GM has invested about $16.8 billion in its U.S. facilities since 2009, the company said. About $11.4 billion of that has come after a 2011 UAW-GM National agreement.

“By working together, the UAW and GM are making a difference in communities across the United States,” said UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada, who leads the union’s GM Department. “These investments represent the power of our collaboration to create jobs and improve competitiveness, quality and our manufacturing base in this country.”

In total, the investments have created 3,650 new jobs and secured the positions of 20,700 others, according to GM. MORE
