GOP hopefuls descend on Michigan: Rand Paul, Scott Walker, Ben Carson in town Monday

LANSING, MI — Michigan will take center stage in the 2016 presidential race on Monday, with three confirmed or likely Republican candidates visiting the state on a single day.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky will speak at separate events, while Dr. Ben Carson is expected to officially announce his candidacy in his hometown of Detroit.

“I think the key here is that it shows Michigan will be relevant,” said Saul Anuzis, a consultant and former chair of the Michigan Republican Party. “Most candidates believe they can play here.”

Carson, set to announce at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit, will join a handful of Republicans who have officially entered the race. Several others have formed exploratory committees or otherwise expressed interest a run. MORE
