Deadline is today for delinquent taxes in Wayne County

It’s deadline day for Wayne county homeowners to pay their delinquent taxes and avoid foreclosure. Officials in the treasurer’s office say they have been doing everything they can do to help residents avoid losing their homes.

The office started the foreclosure process last June on nearly 75-thousand properties, the vast majority of them being in Detroit. In Detroit, a program was initiated that waived interest and penalties on 2015 taxes for homeowners in a payment plan that reduced their interest rate as long as they pay this year’s taxes by February of next year.

Recent legislation passed in Lansing allows the treasurer to lower interest on debt from 18 percent to six percent. Homes that end up in foreclosure will be auctioned in the fall.
