Woman narrowly escaped stalled car before train hit, officials say

A 63-year-old Ann Arbor woman had just enough time to grab her purse and flee from her stalled car before a train smashed into it Saturday in Augusta Township, officials said.

The woman was headed north on rural McKean Road when her Honda Accord stalled on the tracks just north of Willis Road around 10:30 a.m., according to Augusta Township assistant fire Chief Dave Music.

Music said the woman grabbed her purse and fled.

She was alone in the vehicle and not injured.

A westbound Norfolk Southern train struck the passenger side of the car and pushed it about 75 yards away from McKean.

The train, which appeared to be carrying automobiles, came to a stop and was blocking both McKean and Willis roads while Michigan State Police investigated late Saturday morning.

There are no crossing gates at McKean and the tracks. MORE
