Wayne County has a plan for overcrowded jails

Wayne County may have an answer to dealing with the problem of jail overcrowding. A Wayne County Commission committee has approved a measure that would allow the county to send inmates to jails in other counties. The full commission is expected to take up the issue this week. The committee action, which came on a unanimous vote, would send 20 inmates to the Isabella County jail and 15 to Tuscola County. Sheriff Benny Napolean supports the move, saying it would reduce the population of the jail and save costs on overtime for deputies. Figures last week showed there were over 1700 inmates in Wayne County’s three jails.
