Fight over an Islamic school becomes a Federal case

The US Department of Justice is suing Pittsfield Township over a decision to deny zoning approval for the Michigan Islamic Academy to build a school on a vacant parcel of land. The complaint alleges that Pittsfield Township imposed a “substantial burden” on MIA’s exercise of religion when it refused to grant its request for rezoning. MIA is currently located in Ann Arbor and sought to build in Pittsfield Township because it wants more space.
