Ann Arbor City Council approves deer cull

Deer

The Ann Arbor City Council voted on Thursday 8-1 in favor of hiring sharpshooters to cull deer this winter. The Council also voted the same evening to change a city law to allow the discharge of weapons in public places: the change was necessary for the deer extraction to take place. Dozens of citizens packed the city council chamber to argue the shootings will be dangerous to the public and unnecessary to cope with the deer population. People opposed to the cull point to a state DNR report that says the Ann Arbor deer population is not a threat to vegetation. They’re also concerned about public safety. The cull will take place at night in city-owned parks and natural areas. Trained sharp shooters will be brought in to lure 100 deer into their sights and kill them with one fatal shot to the head.
