The U.N. approves action against the Islamic State

United Nations emblem

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution for all nations to work together to prevent Islamic terrorist attacks. The resolution comes on the heels of the Paris attacks, Beirut suicide bombings, the Russian airliner crash in Egypt, as well as the “horrifying terrorist attacks” that occurred in Sousse, Tunisia, and Turkey. ISIS claimed credit for all the atrocities. The resolution states members “take all necessary measures” to overcome violent extremism, yet does not include the use of military force because the resolution was not drafted under the Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter. Russia is revising an earlier proposal to the U.N. that requires cooperation from all countries to participate in current counterterrorism operations, alluding to Syrian operations. Western countries say Russia’s conditions remain “a problem,” but are not elaborating on what those problems are.
