Chicago officer charged in death of teen appears in court

Jason VanDyke

The White Chicago Police Officer charged in the shooting death of a black teen in October 2014, sparking protests in the city, appears in court today or he will be assessed by one judge and arraigned by another. Correspondent Nick Gale reported: Officer Jason VanDyke is charged with first degree murder for the death of 17-year-old Lequan McDonald. VanDyke’s attorney, Daniel Herbert, said his client feared for his life after McDonald, who had PCP in his system, came upon VanDyke wielding a knife. Herbert said, “When McDonald jumped out of the car, the subject made a motion that put my client in fear that this individual was going to perhaps attack him with the knife.” The dash cam captured VanDyke firing sixteen shots at McDonald. VanDyke has been free on bond. Herbert is requesting a change of venue for his client.
