New York prepares for New Year’s Eve

Technicians will test out the lighted ball, which comprises 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles, to make sure it works properly on New Year’s Eve. New York City Police Department is making sure it’s going to be ready as well. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said 6,000 officers will be positioned in an around Times Square. The city is working more officers this year than in previous years. He said with more than a million expected to attend, most from out of town, he’s not taking any chances. Everyone arriving to Times Square on Thursday will have to pass through metal detectors. The new Critical Response Command Unit will be out in full force, with hundreds of officers trained to respond to an active shooting situation: there will be more officers out with helmets and long guns, and check points will be present. Mayor Bill De Blasio said, although there’s been heightened terror attacks recently, he assures people Time Square will be safe on New Year’s Eve. The Joint Terrorism Task force has been in communications with the Department of Homeland Security and no credible threats of terrorism have been reported.
