New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s executive orders say the homeless must be brought to shelters when the temperature is at or below the freezing mark. Cuomo told told WCBS 880 radio in New York that it’s not acceptable for people to say they’re afraid to enter a shelter because it’s unsafe or unsanitary. Homeless person William Sanders said that he feels “violated,” he considers the order as “cruel and unusual punishment,” and states there will be violence on the street if the homeless are forced into shelters. Cuomo said the executive order states, “if the local governments need help that we will provide it.” Questions are being raised at Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s office as to whether a person can be forcibly removed from the street if they don’t pose a danger to themselves or others. DeBlasio has been under criticism for the number of homeless on the streets of the city. The governor’s office released a statement that is plan within the next couple weeks as to how it will execute measures to support the shelters.
