Godmother steals from child’s GoFundMe account

Emily Prowell

Money in a GoFundMe account that was supposed to be used for a Detroit mother whose child died on Christmas morning, was stolen by the child’s godmother. After five-month-old Emily Prowell died of severe acute respiratory syndrome, her godmother, who’s name has not been released, started a GoFundMe account, telling people she was trying to raise money for the child’s funeral. The account accrued $2,755. Emily’s mother, Mechelle Prowell, however, said she never received the funds. Channel 4 Detroit spoke to the godmother, who said Prowell was only interested in a little extra spending money, and she and the family didn’t care about the funeral. The godmother said she also attempted to give the money back, but the GoFundMe account was frozen. After Prowell contacted the police, the community raised enough funds to pay for Emily’s funeral. A memorial for Emily is scheduled for Tuesday. Police say an investigation is ongoing and charges may be filed if the fund was started under false pretenses.
