Taiwan elected Tsai Ing-wen as its first female president. Tsai is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, which supports independence from China. Tsai’s opponents say her position to separate from China will weaken necessary relations with China. Chinese officials say they will take Taiwan by force should it choose to separate.
