Detroit schools can expect more teacher sick-outs

Many Detroit schools could be shut again today because of another expected sick-out. Teachers have been protesting conditions in the schools. Students at Detroit Cass tech say they will walk out of the school this morning and hold a demonstration in support of teachers. Meantime, the Detroit Public Schools will get a second chance on Monday to have the Michigan Court of Claims issue a temporary restraining order to block teachers from calling sick-outs and closing schools. The Court denied the districts first request at a hearing last Thursday, but agreed to revisit the issue at a hearing set for Monday morning at 11:00. Previous sick-outs have resulted in the closings of dozens of city schools.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS:

  • WILLIAMSON HIGH SCHOOL IS CLOSED
  • DETROIT UNIVERSITY PREP ACADEMY IS CLOSED
  • DETROIT UNIVERSITY MATH AND SCIENCE IS CLOSED
