For Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent when many Christians go to church to have a dash of ashes placed on their foreheads, a couple local churches are adding a non-traditional approach. The Novi United Methodist Church on 10 Mile Road is offering “Drive Through Ashes.” You can drive up to the church and the pastor and volunteers will be available to come to your car. St. David’s Episcopal Church in Southfield is providing the same service: you don’t even have to get out of the vehicle. Representatives from the churches say the service is an opportunity to participate in the tradition for receiving the ashes for people who have lost their connection to the church or who have never even participated. The drive thru service will be offered through 11:00 a.m.
