Michigan Nuke Plant To Close

A nuclear power plant in Michigan is closing.
Entergy Corporation announces it will shut down the Palisades nuclear plant in October of 2018.
The company says
“We determined that a shutdown in 2018 is prudent when comparing the transaction to the business risks of continued operation.”
The announcement comes after Consumers Energy said it would stop purchasing power from the Palisades plant, in southwest Michigan. Entergy acquired the plant from Consumers in 2007.

Palisades will be refueled as scheduled in the spring of 2017 and operate through the end of the fuel cycle, then permanently shut down on Oct. 1, 2018.
More than 600 employees will lose their jobs.
The plant has been subject to numerous problems.
Gov. Snyder’s office, informed in advance, says the state will put economic development efforts in place to help the entire region and assist local governments with their transition plans.
