Fire officials in northern Michigan are investigating a suspicious fire at Boyne Highlands resort.
The blaze was ignited in the early morning hours on Sunday in a room where firefighters say a fire extinguisher was missing. Here’s a piece of the 911 call where officials believe the fire originated…
12 people were injured in the fire, including one man who suffered smoke inhalation. He was transported to a Grand Rapids hospital and is reportedly in critical condition. When firefighters arrived at the scene, Harbor Springs Fire Department Chief John Cupps says they immediately worked to get the 113 guests of the resort out safely. Cupps says the main lobby of the lodge is still intact, as are the buildings to the north and south, but the center portion of the lodge looks to be a complete loss. “Our primary concern right now is for those impacted by the fire, and for their health and wellbeing,” said Mike Chumbler, president/general manager of Boyne Highlands Resort. “We’re extremely grateful to the fire, EMS, and law enforcement agencies who are managing the situation.” Boyne officials say they’ll be closed until further notice.
