GM Goes To Supreme Court Over Switches

General Motors is asking the U-S Supreme Court to shield the company from lawsuits stemming from the ignition switch fiasco.

GM is trying to block hundreds of lawsuits by customers who claim faulty ignition switches were behind crashes that caused injuries and deaths.

A federal appeals court ruled that GM is liable, despite the company’s bankruptcy in 2009.
GM contends that bankruptcy left the new company free and clear of liabilities of the old company, including lawsuits.

GM has already paid $2 billion in criminal and civil penalties and settlements . The company acknowledged that some of its employees knew about the switch defect for years before a recall was started.
The high court may announce whether it will take the case next spring.
