Can Detroit Teen Stand Trial For Shooting His Friend?

A 13 year old boy charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his 13 year old friend is due in court today to hear the results of a previously-ordered
competency exam.

He and his 15 year old brother were staying at their grandmother’s back on December 12th.

They were off school because of a snow day.

They invited Emarjae Watkins to come over and join them.

While playing with a gun they found in a bedroom, Watkins was shot and killed.

The shooter was charged as a juvenile with manslaughter.

His grandmother, 58 year old Lise Cox, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors say she was grossly negligent for not having the gun secured.

She said her bedroom door had been locked and that the boys had broken into the room and got the gun.

A 36th district court judge eventually dismissed the charge against her.
