What will Wayne County will do about it’s unfinished jail, and an offer by businessman Dan Gilbert on a new jail for a soccer stadium?
The County Executive, Warren Evans, says work will proceed to finish the jail, while his office studies the Gilbert proposal for possible negotiations. Evans says the county will promise the jail contractor, Walsh Construction, $500,000 up front money so that the contractor can submit a full plan to finish the jail. Evans says a detailed response to the county’s RFP should be in in May.
That’s about the time that Evans says the county should complete it’s study of the Gilbert plan. Gilbert’s Rock Ventures proposes building a new criminal justice complex west of Greektown, in exchange for getting the site of the unfinished jail. Gilbert wants to build a new soccer stadium, or other developments, to go along with his Greektown Casino and other properties he owns.
