Ann Arbor police believe that two of three claims of hate crimes in November were false reports. No charges will be filed for filing false crime reports. A third claim is being investigated.
The three incidents were reported in mid November in downtown Ann Arbor.
A woman reported being slashed with something, possibly a safety pin, by a white man in the 600 block of Liberty Street.
Investigators believed the incident may have been due to the safety pin she was wearing. Safety pins are often used as a sign of protest.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor has declined to charge a second woman who police say falsely claimed a man threatened to set her hijab on fire. Police investigated, and found the claim was false.
Authorities believe an incident in which a woman wearing an outfit that may have resembled clothing for some Muslim women— was pushed down a hill – was a true report, according to M-Live.
The investigation has gone stale, and those with information on the incident are encouraged to contact the Ann Arbor Police Department tip line at 734-794-6939 or [email protected].
