Outsmarting the smart meters.
Lawmakers will debate giving homeowners the option to reject “smart meters” from being installed outside their homes.
A committee hearing will occur today in Lansing.
Smart meters have been installed by DTE and Consumers Energy over the past few years.
Under a bill being proposed, customers who want to go back to the old meters and decide not to self-read would be charged a monthly fee of $5 and utilities would remove the new meters from homes.
