VW Plea In Detroit

Volkswagen is scheduled to formally plead guilty today in Detroit Federal Court to charges involving the company’s emissions scandal.

The automaker had been accused of intentionally installing software in its diesel vehicles sold in the United-States from 2009 until 2015 that was designed to cheat U-S emission requirements.

The German company has agreed to pay 2.8 billion dollars in criminal fines and another 1.5 billion dollars in civil penalties.

To date, six current and former VW executives have been indicted on criminal charges.

One of those charged is 48 year old Oliver Schmidt, a German national, who had worked in VW’s Auburn Hills offices from 2012 to early 2015.

He was arraigned in Detroit late last month and remains in federal custody.
