Faction Fights Fouts

The Macomb County Election Commission is scheduled to meet this afternoon to review a recall petition aimed at embattled Warren Mayor Jim Fouts.
Joseph Hunt, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Fouts in 2011, filed the recall petition this month.

His recall says Fouts can be heard on audiotapes making derogatory comments against people with mental disabilities, women and african-americans and is unfit to hold office.

Fouts has denied the voice on the tape is his.

Fouts had survived a recall effort in 2014 from Warren resident Karen Spranger.

Spranger, as the recently elected Macomb County Clerk, is now a member of the county election panel that will today review wording on Hunt’s recall petition.

It has raised the question of whether she would have to recuse herself from today’s hearing.

If a majority of the panel approves the petition language, Hunt could begin collecting signatures to put a recall question on the ballot.
