Will Mutilation Doc Lose Parental Rights?

The state of Michigan wants to terminate the parental rights of the Northville doctor charged with female genital mutilation.

Doctor Jumana Nagarwala is awaiting trial in Detroit Federal Court.

Child Protective Services has filed a petition on behalf of her two school-aged children, a son and a daughter.

The petition says the daughter underwent the mutilation procedure, which the state considers child abuse.

A hearing on the petition is scheduled for this afternoon in Wayne County Juvenile Court.

The state has also moved to terminate the parental rights if another couple awaiting trial with Nagarwala.

They are Farmington Hills Doctor Fahkruddin Attar and his wife. The hearing is June 13.
