Detroit Rally Planned Against Deportations

A rally on behalf of illegals rounded up for deportation is planned as a federal court hearing is scheduled for today on a class action lawsuit filed by the ACLU.

The suit seeks to stop federal immigration officials from deporting more than 100 Iraqi nationals who were rounded up in the Detroit-area by federal officials the weekend of June 9th.

It argues it is illegal to deport them without giving them an opportunity to prove they would face torture or death if returned to Iraq. None of them are U.S. citizens.

Government officials say all of those taken into custody had been convicted of crimes and were subject to deportation.

ACLU attorneys say many of the crimes were committed decades ago and that sentences had been served.
