Police Practice Pedal Power

The Detroit Police Department is getting some two-wheeled help. It’ll be evident at the fireworks.

‘ Project Peace Peddlers.’

It’s a new bicycle patrol squad that will work with neighborhood police officers.

21 volunteers, all military veterans, will ride through neighborhoods and along the riverfront that are not easily accessible to police cars.

They will report on any quality of life issues that range from stray animals, downed power lines, gas or water main breaks, abandoned buildings and safe routes to and from neighborhood schools.

Their first big job begins today …with the volunteers on duty for tonight’s 59th annual Ford Fireworks show.

As of now, the program is designed to run through the summer months, but could eventually become a year-round effort.
