Wayco Jail Update

More could be learned today about the fate of the unfinished Wayne County Jail
Walsh Construction of Chicago, the only qualified bidder to complete the jail at its current location on Gratiot is scheduled to present its plans for the project today.

The company’s proposal had been due back in the middle of last month, but the company had asked for an extension.

The company said it needed more time to create a plan that would meet the needs of the county.

County executive Warren Evans said he wants to get the project going as fast as anyone, but that he was going to ensure that steps were taken to get it right.

Businessman Dan Gilbert’s Rock Ventures had made the county an offer to buy the site and turn it into a soccer stadium and entertainment complex.

Ground was broken for the jail back in 2011 under then county executive Robert Ficano.

It was halted in 2013 after massive cost overruns and allegations of mismanagement.
