Iraqi’s Can Stay, For Now

The judge says it’s against the constitution.
A United States District Court judge has temporarily halted the deportation of dozens of Iraqi’s rounded up in Metro Detroit and across the county.

U.S. District Court Judge Mark Goldsmith ruled that each potential deportee deserves a date in court.

The immigrants said they would be persecuted, tortured or killed if they were sent back to Iraq. The government opposed the motion, claiming the court had no jurisdiction.
Goldsmith said the government’s view is “inconsistent with the Constitution’s command.”

Some detainees across the county have been transferred to detention centers. The ones from  Detroit were sent to a center in Youngstown, Ohio.

The immigrants will remain in custody during the court process. Another hearing is scheduled August 31st.
