A South Haven man will be in Washington today to receive the nation’s highest military honor.

71 year old James McCloughan is to receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War.
The retired high school teacher was there in two days of close-combat fighting in mid-May of 1969. His actions as a U-S Army combat medic saved the lives
of ten members of his platoon along with that of a Vietnamese interpreter

He was also wounded during the fighting.

McCloughan said he is humbled to receive the medal and will accept it on behalf of all of his men.

He said he is still close to the old members of his platoon and has reconnected with 20 of them in recent years.
