UAW Tries To Organize Southern Plant

Workers at the Nissan auto plant in Canton, Mississippi are voting today and tomorrow on whether to affiliate with the United Auto Workers Union.
This will be the UAW’s third try at organizing the carmaker’s workers in the south.

Union president Dennis Williams said they have a good shot at winning this election.

But he also accused Nissan of intimidating employees by threatening to move the plant or cut production.

Nissan has denied the charges.

This election is to be supervised by the National Labor Relations Board.

The UAW previously tried unsuccessfully to organize workers at the Nissan plant in Smyrna, Tennessee in 1998 and 2001.
