Murder Triggered By Med Alert Device

A Grand Rapids-area man is due in court today to face charges in the beating death of his 85 year old grandmother.
Police say 23 year old Mathew Malleaux shared a home with his grandmother in Sparta and that he had been drinking heavily in the early morning hours of August 7th when he became upset
because the woman’s medical alert device went off.

Police say he beat the woman so badly that her injuries included a collapsed lung, a dislocated shoulder, a fractured cheekbone and a fracture of the bone around her eye.

Since the woman’s medical alert device had gone off, paramedics were sent to the scene.

When they arrived, they say Malleaux threw a large concrete lawn statue at one of the responders, hitting him in the head.

He then barricaded himself in the home.

Police arrived, saw the unconscious woman and forced their way into the home and took Malleaux into custody.

Sparta has a population of 43-hundred residents

It was the towns first murder in 13 years.
