Judge Checks On Iraqi Detainees

A Detroit federal Court Judge overseeing the case involving Iraqi detainees wants an update by today on the latest court filings concerning the situation.

Some 14-hundred Iraqi’s had been arrested in sweeping immigration raids this summer.

The government wants them deported.

Opponents say they would face torture and even death if forced to return to Iraq.

ACLU attorneys told Judge Mark Goldsmith in a status conference last week that the detainees are being coerced into signing legal paperwork that would automatically send them back to Iraq.

The civil rights organization wants the government to let it know which of the detainees have lawyers and which need attorneys as they fight to stay in the country.

The judge, who issued a ruling in late July which temporarily halted any deportations, has ordered both sides to report back to him today with an update on the situation by way of a telephone conference.
