Diocese Buries Unclaimed Remains

Some of them had no next of kin. Many of them were babies.
The remains of more than 300 people have been cremated at the St. Joseph Cemetery mausoleum in Lansing.
The bodies were unclaimed. Some of them had been stored at a hospital and at local funeral homes for many years.
Some of them were the last of their line. No other family members existed.
But most of them were stillborn infants. The remains have been interred.
Sparrow Hospital and The Catholic Diocese of Lansing organized the cremations. The Ingham County Medical Examiner’s office carried out a lengthy investigation to identify each of the remains and try to notify families.
