Old Kronk Gym Burns Down

Made famous by Thomas Hearns. Now it’s gone. Arson investigators sifted thru the charred ruins of a long-vacant building that was the site of the Kronk boxing gym.

When firefighters arrived at the gym at McGraw and Junction just before 9:30 Saturday night, flames were already reaching out of the second floor.

The roof collapsed a short time later. Authorities say it was deliberately set.

The building, which had been built in the 1920’s, closed in 2006 and had been vacant and in disrepair for some time.

The gym had been founded by the late Emanuel Steward, who trained 41 world champions over his career.

Tommy Hearns was one of those who had called the Kronk gym his home.
