Detroit Cop Faces Possible Trial

A Detroit police officer is due in court today … as a defendant.

40 year old Michael Merritt has been charged with larceny from a motor vehicle and misconduct in office.

Prosecutors say Merritt took a hydraulic jack and tools from a car that had been parked in the 3rd precinct parking lot.

Officials say it was all caught on a surveillance camera.

Police Chief James Craig said Merritt had been under surveillance for another matter at the time.

He did not elaborate other than to say that it didn’t involve any theft allegations.

Merritt, a 17 year member of the force, is due in court today for a preliminary exam on the theft charge.
