Parents Charged In Infant’s Death

An arraignment is scheduled for a Lansing couple charged in the death of their infant daughter.
36 year old Joshua and 30 year old Rachel Piland are charged with refusing to seek medical treatment for their newborns jaundice symptoms.

They have been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

The infant died in February.

A midwife had warned the couple their daughter’s jaundice could be life threatening.

Defense attorneys say the couple did position the girl near a window in an attempt to help treat the problem with sunlight … and that they had used the same procedure in
successfully treating one of the couples children who had suffered from jaundice.

The state is currently in a fight with the couple over custody of their other two children.
