Land Deal Back On Council Table

The Detroit City Council is again today scheduled to review a land deal with Wayne County that would help pave the way for construction of a 520-million dollar criminal justice complex near Warren and the I-75 freeway.
The land deal is part of a lengthy process in which Dan Gilbert’s Rock Ventures would build the complex which would replace the original jail site on Gratiot near the county jail.

Work on that project was halted following large cost overruns and charges of mismanagement.

The council was set to take up the measure last week.

But, it was put off until today following concerns from area residents on the impact the facility would have on their neighborhood.

The decision to delay any action came just a few hours after a resident filled a lawsuit against Detroit to stop officials from authorizing the deal.

Nicholas Miller, who lives 3 blocks from the proposed site, charged the jail would disrupt the quality of life and cause a considerable loss in property value.
