Lt. Underwood Comes Home

The remains of a bomber crew member from River Rouge will be laid to rest 73 years after he was killed in World War Two.
2nd Lt. Donald Underwood and other crew members were killed when their plane crashed after takeoff in the Gilbert Islands in January 1944.
Painstaking work by families and organizations of military supporters led to the recovery and identification of the remains of Underwood.
They have been returned home.
Today is visitation. Tomorrow is the funeral.
More than two dozen relatives remain in the area.

Visitation for Lt. Donald Underwood is today at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home in Flat Rock.
A funeral mass is Saturday at St. Mary Magdelene Church in Melvindale.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
