Break For Some Ticket Scofflaws

It’s an early Christmas present of sorts for people who can’t afford to pay fines they owe for traffic offenses.
A Federal Judge has blocked the state from continuing with a state law that allows for the suspension of the drivers licenses of those people who are money strapped.

Judge Linda Parker issued a preliminary injunction in a case by those who sued to stop the action.

She said in a ruling that there is a strong likelihood that many of the plaintiffs will be able to show that the law violates the right to due process

The lawsuit was filed by a civil rights group that accused secretary of state Ruth Johnson of running a scheme that favored the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

A spokesman for the secretary of state’s office said the ruling is being reviewed, but that the office beleives all state traffic laws are equally applied to all drivers.
