Lawsuit Accuses Jackson Sheriff Of Bigoted Behavior

A Michigan sheriff faces serious allegations in a lawsuit filed by a command-level officer of the department.

Jackson County sheriff’s Lt. Tommy Schuette accuses the sheriff, Steven Rand, of using slurs to insult blacks, women, Hispanics, and mocking him for a hearing loss. Schuette alleges that Sheriff Rand harrassed him because of his hearing disability, and created a hostile work environment.
Schuette’s lawyer says he has recordings of some of the remarks. The lawsuit accuses Sheriff Rand of calling a former black deputy a “dumb (blank)”, a female judge “a scatterbrained (blank)”, and of making a sexual slur about making a snuff film with a female county employee.
Jackson County officials told M Live they had not received the federal court lawsuit.
