Lawsuit Charges Detroit Election Payoff

A civil lawsuit contends that Detroit Councilman Gabe Leland demanded a campaign donation of thousands of dollars in exchange for help in a land dispute. The lawsuit ties the F-B-I into the controversy.

The lawsuit was filed by Robert Carmack, who owns an auto repair shop.
Carmack was disputing ownership of the property with the city of Detroit.
The lawsuit says Councilman Leland promised to fix the dispute if Carmack would donate 15-thousand dollars to Leland’s re-election.
The lawsuit says Carmack wore a recording device for the F-B-I in a meeting with a campaign worker, and gave the worker 75-hundred dollars.
Carmack also says he repaired a car for Leland, on the direction of the F-B-I.

Leland’s office had no comment.
No criminal charges exist.
