Starting Date Announced For I-696 Project

The construction project that will shut down westbound I-696 between I-94 and I-75 is set to get underway on Monday.
Signs will be put up, and signals will be installed on the service drive.
MDOT will not close the freeway until the end of April or early May.

The freeway is not expected to reopen until November.

MDOT says it must be completed while funding remains available and before an I-75 project gets underway.
The suggested freeway detour for westbound I-94 traffic which would merge onto westbound I-696 is to stay westbound I-94 until reaching I-75 in Detroit. Then go northbound on I-75 to westbound I-696.
Much of the Traffic coming the north side would have to use the mile roads to go westbound.
